Our food-waste fighting products are the result of scientific rigor that is at the heart of our commitment to measuring and continuously improving the environmental performance of our business and operations. The launch of our first Sustainability Report quantifies the progress we’ve made as never before and invites you to help extend that impact. On our new Apeel sustainability page, you’ll see depictions of how each Apeel Avocado saves resources like water and GHG emissions compared to a regular avocado.
Wondering where we got that data? We’ve used a life cycle assessment (LCA) method to measure the environmental footprint of fresh produce with and without the Apeel coating. LCA considers all of the inputs and outputs required for a product to exist, from raw material extraction to production, distribution, use, and disposal. By quantifying our impact at each of these stages, we can measure how Apeel impacts resource usage and several other environmental impacts, including GHG emissions. These metrics empower our technology teams to further reduce our environmental footprint and allow our business development teams to target where Apeel can generate the largest environmental savings. Don’t take our word for it! We get these LCA studies reviewed by Quantis USA to ensure that we’re using the best available data and methods in compliance with the ISO 14044 standard.
This approach measures whether our products create environmental benefits and what resources are required to make them. In our full LCA report, you will see that Apeel’s environmental benefits outweigh the product’s impacts by a factor of at least 10:1 in almost all environmental impact categories. In some instances, the benefits outweigh the impacts by over 100:1!
