Natural Egg Dye How-To

Author: Apeel Team

This Easter, dye your eggs naturally using fresh produce you already have at home. Bonus points if you can use produce that's past its prime for less food waste!

All you need is small jars, hard-boiled eggs, vinegar, and water to get started.

Instructions:

  • For all of these, place water, vinegar, and the produce item (chopped, if necessary) into a saucepan
  • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes
  • Take it off the heat, cool for 10 minutes, and pour the dye over a strainer into the jars with eggs in them
  • Place the lids on the jars and refrigerate overnight
  • Carefully remove the eggs from the dye and transfer to wire rack; allow to dry completely before touching

Dark Blue:

  • 2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Yellow:

  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Light Green:

  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Pink/Red:

  • Fresh beets
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Blue:

  • 1/2 head red cabbage (2-3 cups)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Happy Easter!
